ONE DAY HIKE TO LA LEONA STATION

We will begin our adventure at 5:30 am in Puerto Jiménez, where we will take transportation with our tour guide. For approximately two hours, we will cross rivers and roads surrounded by lush forests until we reach the community of Carate. This is the last human settlement near Corcovado and home to the largest population of scarlet macaws in the country.

Once in Carate, our guide will give us a brief explanation of the day's activity before we start our hike through a secondary forest trail. From the beginning of the tour, we will be surrounded by rich local fauna, which includes mammals such as squirrels, coatis, and up to four types of monkeys: howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, capuchins, and spider monkeys, as well as a great variety of birds.

Our journey will continue along coastal trails until we reach the La Leona station, where we will register with the park rangers and take a well-deserved break to enjoy a snack.

We will continue exploring nature, marveling at the enormous trees and, with a bit of luck, spotting snakes in their roots or tiny poison dart frogs. When crossing rivers, we might encounter a tapir and, if fortune is on our side, perhaps even a puma.

The final destination of our tour will be the “La Hedionda” stream. Despite its name, which comes from its natural smell at certain times of the year, its waters are clean and offer the opportunity for a refreshing swim. The scenery of the sea, hermit crabs, and coconut palms will create the perfect setting for a well-deserved lunch.

After midday, we will start our way back to Carate, where the transportation will take us back to Puerto Jiménez, at approximately 3:00 pm.
